The bottom of the water slides is full of action. Especially the racing kind. After every kid or adult zooms down, they all look at each other with a smile, terror, or bewilderment. Then it’s followed by an after-action report. A deep dive into the details of every twist and turn, and who beat who. Then it’s a race back to the top for another round.
It’s fascinating that we all summarize events. We can draw on experience and tell a story. It’s how we modify our behavior for the next time. If it’s on a slide, we may adjust our feet to create more speed. If we bomb a test, we regroup and spend more time studying.
After action reports are critical in schools, at home, in business, and in sports. They serve a purpose in all settings, creating clarity for better outcomes. They are limitless and expand with scope. It is reflection, then adjustment, that propels us forward.
Is your team using after-action reports to become its best?
