Repetition is the most valuable asset in sport. We must not spend excessive time speaking technique and skill into our athletes. Coach on the fly with sound bite coaching. An expansive vocabulary will trigger players into a correction. Repeat words that give meaning to desired technique or outcomes. Attention spans are extremely diverse. Long-winded coaches are muted over time.
The Tipping Point
Sound bite coaching is a practiced technique. You become good through trial and error. The ability to recognize what players respond to is critical. Each player has a tipping point, where they begin to grasp and take on the preferred behavior. This approach holds great validity when terminology is consistent within the team. Common terms should be created by the coaching staff and disseminated. Sound bite coaching streamlines meetings, drill introductions, in-between play talk, & overall practice.
